چکیده

We present the results of a long-term variability campaign of very broad-line AGNs with line widths broader than FWHM > 5000 kms −1. The main goal of our investigation was to study whether the widths of the optical broad emission lines are correlated with the optical intensity variations on timescales of years. Our AGN sample consisted of 10 objects. We detected a significant correlation between optical continuum variability amplitudes and Hβ emission line widths (FWHM) and, to a lesser degree, between Hβ line intensity variations and Hβ equivalent widths. We add the spectroscopic data of variable AGNs from the literature to supplement our sample. The AGNs from other optical variability campaigns with different line-widths helped to improve the statistical significance of our very broad-line AGN sample. After including the data on 35 additional galaxies, the correlation between optical continuum variability amplitudes and Hβ emission line widths becomes even more significant and the probability that this is a random correlation drops to 0.7 percent.

X-ray Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei with Intermediate Mass Black Holes

We present a systematic X-ray study of eight active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with intermediate mass black holes (MBH ∼ 8− 95× 10 4 M⊙) based on 12 XMM-Newton observations. The sample includes the two prototype AGNs in this class – NGC 4395 and POX 52 and six other AGNs discovered with the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey. These AGNs show some of the strongest X-ray variability with the normalized exces...

Accretion Disks and the Nature and Origin of Agn Continuum Variability

Theory and observations of the dominant thermal continuum emission in AGNs are examined. After correction for reddening, the steady state AGN optical–UV spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are very similar. The SEDs are dominated energetically by the “big blue bump” (BBB), but this bump never shows the ν spectrum predicted for a standard thin accretion disk with a r radial temperature gradient...

Optical, UV, and X-ray Clues to the Nature of Narrow Line AGNs

AGNs with narrow Balmer lines show various extreme properties. In particular, rapid X-ray variability, steep X-ray spectra, peculiar optical and UV line ratios, and possibly peculiar line profiles. Since all these phenomena occur together they are likely to be related to one specific underlying physical parameter. I review recent evidence, based on HST imaging of low z quasars, which suggests t...

Probing variability patterns of the Fe K line complex in bright nearby AGNs

Context. The unprecedented sensitivity of current X-ray telescopes allows for the first time to address the issue of the Fe K line complex variability patterns in bright, nearby AGNs. These kind of studies have the potential to map the accretion flow in the strong gravity regime of supermassive black holes. Aims. We examine XMM-Newton observations of the brightest sources of the FERO sample of ...

We studied the X-ray variability of sources detected in the Chandra Deep Field South (Giacconi et al. 2002), nearly all of which are low to moderate z AGN (Tozzi et al. 2001). We find that 45% of the sources with > 100 counts exhibit significant variability on timescales ranging from a day up to a year. The fraction of sources found to be variable increases with observed flux, suggesting that >...
